What Is a Floor Spring?

2022-09-01 17:05:11 admin 17

The floor spring is a hydraulic door closer, except that the device that compresses the spring is a worm wheel rather than a gear or rack. Because the worm wheel can rotate forward and backward, the floor spring can be used for doors that open in both directions, while the door closer can only be used for doors that open in one direction. The technical key of the floor spring is the load-bearing seat under the spindle, which determines the load-bearing level of the floor spring.

Product Overview

A floor spring is a hydraulic door closer, except that the device that compresses the spring is a worm wheel rather than a rack and pinion.

Because a floor spring for a bi-directional door has to carry the weight of the door body, the weight of the door body plays a decisive role in the selection of the floor spring compared to a door closer. In practice, the weight of the door is generally not excessive, so the door width and wind pressure are the preferred factors for the selection of the floor spring model. Also pay attention to the aspect ratio, i.e. the ratio of height and width, if it is too disproportionate, the door will not work properly. From the production point of view, the worm wheel structure of the floor spring makes the compression degree of the spring smaller than that of the rack and pinion driven door closer, and the force arm of the floor spring closing is also short, so the quality of the floor spring is more dependent on the structural design and processing accuracy. In addition, because the door opening in both directions has a large force on the floor spring along the door plane, the service life of the low-grade floor spring will be very different from that of the high-grade floor spring.

Structural composition

The basic configuration of the floor spring is the sky shaft and the ground shaft (or the foot). The sky shaft is an accessory that connects the door frame and the door fan at the top, and consists of a pin-type shaft that can be adjusted with bolts fixed to the door fan and a sleeve that is fixed to the door fan. The overhead floor shaft can be used on almost all wood, steel and aluminum doors and frameless glass doors with glass door clips.

Floor spring closers provide reverse checking, hold open, adjustable latching action and closing speed for locations where vandalism may occur or where aesthetics are critical. Our range of floor springs are available in single and double action models, certified for use on fire doors and carry the CE mark.

Floor springs are manufactured for doors that can open inward or outward and are often collectively referred to as double-acting closers. Single-action closers and variants of the floor spring are also available and are primarily used for entrance doors.

Virtually invisible, but fully functional. Floor springs ensure that your door will close automatically when opened. In terms of convenience and security, they are as good as overhead closers. All individual components are built into the floor or door. Floor springs are ideal when the door should be designed to be as inconspicuous as possible - whether in an elegant portal or in an upscale store facility. For semi-circular arched or fully glazed doors, they master this particular challenge as a single system - and with flair.

Adaptable

Floor springs are suitable for most doors, and there are various models for single- or double-action doors. Some single-action floor springs are handed, so if you're not sure, it's best to check the way they feel before you buy.

There are models for both indoor and outdoor use.

There are various models for single-action or double-action doors. Some single-action floor springs are handed, so it's best to check the handing method and ask the supplier if you're not sure. We have a range of accessory kits which include all straps, top swivels, set screws and model specific covers for all floor springs to ensure you don't miss anything when ordering.

Floor springs are particularly effective for oversized doors - floor to ceiling height doors are often too big and heavy for traditional closers, so floor springs with straps and top swivels are a great option.

Most good quality models have adjustable closing force, adjustable closing speed and adjustable latching action, so you can make progressive adjustments to suit your door. Not all door closers have this convenient feature, so it's best to check.

Some floor springs are electromagnetic and have a hold-open feature, which is ideal for fire/smoke doors located in high-traffic areas such as hallways. Simply connect it to a fire alarm using a relay or interface and it will allow the door to close on activation or power failure to ensure isolation.

Never use mechanical hold-open closers on fire doors and always check that your floor springs or other closers provide sufficient intumescent to ensure compliance with building codes. Some floor springs have a 30-minute fire rating, but if you need to be able to achieve a 60-minute rating, you may need to purchase additional intumescent.

There is room for vertical, horizontal and vertical adjustment between the housing and the concrete box, which makes installation simple.

One of the main functions of floor springs is to help particularly heavy doors open and close, even in windy areas where this combination can cause injury to people or the door itself.

If your premises require closers and you prefer concealed closers, then floor springs have an advantage over traditional closers because they are suitable for almost any situation; they are ideal for full height or heavier doors, are equally effective for single or double leaf doors, and most importantly, they automatically combine function with aesthetic appeal.
